Cousin, Jean

Cousin, Jean
(ca. 1490-ca. 1561)
   painter, sculptor, engraver
Born in Soucy, near Sens, around 1490, Jean Cousin, who was called Le Père, was a leading artist of the Fontainebleau school. He probably produced the cartoons for the stained glass windows of the cathedral of Sens (Les Sibylles), as well as the cartoons for important tapestries (Histoire de saintMam-mès). He wrote a treatise on painting, Traité de perspective (1560), and did illustrations for books (Orus Apollo, 1543). Cousin was a representative of the mannerist style of the Fontainebleau school, but few of his paintings have survived except Charité and Eva prima Pandora, which is one of the first important French paintings of a nude.
